The Registered Trustees of Nordic Foundation Tanzania is a Non-Profit making and Non-Governmental Organization (NGOs) with certificate of incorporation number 5740 registered under Trustees Incorporation Act (Cap 318 R.E 2002). Originally, the organization was registered as NGOs under Company limited by Guarantees with certificate of Incorporation number 105 100 since 10th January 2014. After statutory change and requirement when the parliament passed New Finance Act 2019 forced all the NGOs registered under Brela to move and comply with new law and re-register again with Rita or Ministry of Home Affairs. That is why, on 15th September, 2020 the organization had to comply with government directives to re-register as the Registered Trustees of Nordic Foundation Tanzania. Since its inception in 2014, the organization over the past ten years, has been advancing the welfare of the vulnerable groups in Tanzania. This is partly because the founders of the organizations are individuals and professionals who lived, worked and studied in Nordic Countries namely Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Finland. These are the Nordic diaspora inspired and influenced heavily by the Nordic model of the welfare states that ensure universal coverage of the social protection for all.
The strength of Nordic Foundation Tanzania is by and large grounded on scientific knowledge acquired through research, consultancy and publications. It promotes evidence-based policy making process in Tanzania and beyond. Through its ten years Strategic Plan 2014-2024, the organization has six key thematic areas, namely to Advocate for Universal Social Protection for all in Tanzania and Beyond, to advocate for Children’ Rights and Child Protection programs, to engage the public and development partners in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programs, to promote Universal access for quality health care services including medical insurance, to promote research, consultancy and evidence-based policy making and to promote rural development, pro-poor agro-economics and environmental conservations. The last but not the least through its ten years strategic plans, the organization seeks to promote financial inclusion through mobile technologies and other cutting-edge technologies especially for poor communities in rural areas.
Among the notable projects since its inception including the research work in collaboration with the former Tanzania Foods and Drugs Authority in 2014 to 2016 to study the magnitude of counterfeit drugs and food stuffs in selected regions in Tanzania. In several countries, counterfeit and substandard pharmaceuticals are a severe public health concern. This is a global issue, but it is especially prevalent in African countries including Tanzania, where more than 30 % of the pharmaceuticals supplied are counterfeit or substandard. Many reasons contribute to the emergence of this issue, which differ from country to country. Online business, light sanctions for drug infringers, ignorance, and an absence of meaningful collaboration amongst players are all variables involved. The Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA), Tanzania Police Force, Weights and Measures Agency Tanzania Fair Competition Commission (FCC), Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) Customs are all involved in the fight against counterfeit drugs in Tanzania. Despite this, more work needs to be done to control the supply of counterfeit and substandard pharmaceuticals, which have major health and economic effects. Based on the public health and economic consequences of these low-quality pharmaceuticals, strong international cooperation is required to address the issue. This includes tighter state licensing oversight of pharmaceutical suppliers. In order to identify these products at various supply chain stages, advanced technologies should be used. Finally, consumers must be educated on how to recognize counterfeit pharmaceuticals and their effects.
Another notable project was conducted in 2016 to 2018 On Mental Health with technical support from Muhimbili National Hospital in the Psychiatry Department. Mental Health is a growing challenge in Tanzania and Beyond. The Foundation has worked in a number of projects since its inception to advance the well-being of the vulnerable groups in the commercial City of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. This went in hand with the project that sought to promote Universal Medical coverage for all in Dar es Salaam and Tanzania in General through a project titled “AFYA BANDO” which was promoted in collaboration with mainstream media namely Clouds Radio & TV, EFM Radio & TV, Abood FM, Upendo Radio. In addition, the Foundation conducted Road Show and Public concerts in public places such as markets and popular bus stations.
In 2018 to-date, Nordic Foundation Tanzania launched a District Level Hospital based in Kinondoni which is known as Tanzania Nordic Hospital. As majority shareholder of the district level hospital, the foundation seeks to increase accessibility of quality health care services especially to the poor people and low-income earners of Dar es Salaam and nearby regions.
In 2018 to 2019, Nordic Foundation worked with REPOA and TASAF in a research project to evaluate the effectiveness and the impacts of Conditional Cash Transfers issued by TASAF under the World Bank funding on recipient poor families in selected districts in Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. Nordic Foundation Tanzania established a medical school in 2021 to-date under the name of Nofota College of Health and Allied Sciences operating from the same Tanzanord hospital premises in plot number 90/2 in Ada Estates Kinondoni along Kilimani Street in Dar es Salaam.
